We were inspired to organize and host a Cake Walk to honor and fundraise for a very wonderful person, Michelle Canning. We named our event CARING FOR CANNING - CAKE WALK. Mrs. Canning was the Clear Creek Secretary for 14 years and a Girls on the Run Head Coach/Assistant Coach/School Coordinator for many years. She is a strong supporter of GOTR. Unfortunately, Mrs. Canning was diagnosed with Cancer in December of 2016.

A Cake Walk was fitting because Mrs. Canning is now in our community as the go-to Baker/Cake decorator for wedding, birthday and other special occasions.

We planned and executed our event in 10 days. We held the Cake Walk on Tuesday and Thursday during our normal practice time. Due to weather the Cake Walk was in our school gym.

The girls made posters, passed out flyers in their neighborhood, we picketed our car loop in the morning (posters and handing out flyers,) we hung posters at the middle school and in local businesses. GOTR families also made and donated baked goods.

So many people helped out: Our school Principal helped with logistics. Our school Librarian allowed us to piggyback on the Book Fair (good foot traffic.) Girl Scout Troops volunteered to bake and donate baked goods, they earned patches. Our local grocery store passed out flyers while bagging groceries. Papa Murphy’s included a flyer with pizzas. The Coaches and I used Facebook to create an event and promote.

It was crazy--friends of Mrs. Canning, Clear Creek Alumni and GOTR Alumni brought in donations--monetary as well as baked goods.

We scheduled for 44 rounds of Cake Walk each day. Based on the number of donated baked goods we had over 75 rounds each day. On Thursday alone we had 119 baked goods. We donated the extras to our custodians and local fire department.

Our GOTR team ran the math and set a goal to raise $1,000 with our Cake Walk. We exceeded our goal--$3,539.02 was the grand total!
