My Girls on the Run journey began as a coach in 2011. This group of vivacious young ladies captured my heart. The lessons and activities outlined in the curriculum helped me grow into a more empowered woman alongside these girls. The opportunity to share my passion of an active lifestyle and building relationships had me drinking the pink GOTR Kool-Aid immediately.
Since this time, I have participated as a SoleMate, 5K Committee member, talked numerous friends into volunteering in different capacities and in 2012 I joined the Girls on the Run Board of Directors. I have had the opportunity to see the organization flourish. Meetings were previously held in a reserved room at a public library where the board was intricately involved in everything from program registration to 5K planning and set-up. Now there is office space and amazing staff, including Program Managers to support coaches and participants and Marketing & Event Management that has made the 5K an amazing celebration.
When thinking what impact Girls on the Run has had on my life, I first think back to my roots as a coach and the lessons that are so valuable for girls and women of all ages including; how to deal with conflict, embracing differences and being intentional with words. As a board member I have enjoyed participating in strategic planning for the growing organization. In these sessions the board discusses how to grow the program and organization, where will the grow take place and how to support it. The board and staff have a huge amount of passion for the program and bringing it to more girls in our community. We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. To do this the board and staff consider how to raise funds to offer a high quality program to participants. In serving our community Girls on the Run Serving Greater Kansas City is passionate about maintain the rate of scholarship available to girls that may not otherwise be able to participate. Even though all board meeting consist of budget discussion, like the volunteers and staff, the GOTR board members do not forget that “Girls on the Run is so much fun”!
