My name is Tori and I am in the 5th grade. Two years ago I started Girls on the Run for my very first time. I had been in dance and cheer and that wasn’t really my thing. When I started running I just knew this was my thing! I have done GOTR for 4 seasons and each season I set my goal time for the race to finish a little faster. On my 4th race for GOTR in the Spring of 2016, I set my goal to be 24 minutes and some thought that may be too high of a goal. I trained so hard and stayed focused and finished at 24.01! Girls on the Run also found out I sing from my GOTR coach so I got to sing the National Anthem in front of thousands that very same day I made this goal. This was one of the happiest days in my life!
Running helped me learn that I like to be active which led me to try a summer swim team. I loved swimming so much that I now swim as a competitive club swimmer for the Tsunami Swim Team of Kansas City. I do dryland training along with pool training 4-6 times a week. Running is great cross-training for swimming and running is what led me to know that activity helps me in so many ways. I have struggled with staying focused at school and both running and swimming help me release all my energy so I can stay focused and maintain good grades.
Girls on the Run has also taught me to support and encourage my teammates. I have carried this onto my swim team and I love to cheer and yell loud for my teammates as they swim their races. I have also learned the importance of being there in the bad times as well as the good times. We all fall a little short of our goals sometimes and I love it when my teammates cheer me up and I love doing the same for them. We need to stick together and encourage each other.
Girls on the Run, you have helped me be confident, driven and supportive of my teammates and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
